Chris, I did something very similar after my wife and I attended FPU. And basically for the same reasons. I love being able to adjust things on the fly if necessary without having to totally write everthing out again. I did mine in Numbers (Apple’s answer to Excel). I also included an additional sheet which shows our savings and checking balances and what amounts in those accounts are allocated to which budget items. I haven’t automated as much as you have, but I hope to use some of your ideas to beef up my budget spreadsheet.
Thank you for sharing this spreadsheet. It will get me off to a great place to start. Can’t get with the paper thing, as I’m an IT person.
Cynthia
Thanks for sharing the spend plan. Where I have always struggled is the best way to record actual monthly expenditures. Do you just replace the budgeted amount with the actual during the month?
Help!! I need more info on Dave Ramsey’s monthly budget.
Carolyn, In what way do you need help?
I came across your spreadsheet and I am VERY excited (you saved me hours of work) however, the password to unlock it isn’t working.
Amanda,
Thanks for catching this. I did not realize that the password is Case-Sensitive. It should be “pass” and I have updated this post to reflect this. Thanks Again.
when I download the spreadsheet, it will not print. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks.
Gary,
First highlight cells A1:R112 and click File > Print Area > Set Print Area. Then go to File > Page Setup and reduce all four margins to 0.25. Then on the Page tab > Scaling, set fit to 1 page wide and 3 pages tall. Then click print. Hope that’s what you meant.
Chris,
This spreadsheet is very good. Thanks for all the work!
Andrew
Andrew,
Thanks for helping me out. I’m glad you like the spreadsheet. I am in the process of adding another one that has 12 tabs on it, so we can fit a whole year in one file. When I finish this I will make another post and keep both files available.
Just what I need. I’m a single parent with the need to really watch what I spend. Would you please notify me when the 12 month sheet is available? Thank you, Thank you, so much! Brady
Hi Chris,
Thanks so much for sharing this. I read Total Financial Makeover, and tried to use Quicken to set up a budget, but like you said, it’s never the same every month?
Susan
Thanks for this! We had our own version of the form we adapted into word, and this makes the process even easier.
I knew there must be something like this out there. This is better than what I was about to attempt myself. Thank you for posting!!

Very nice job! I’m an IT guy, but definitely not an Excel pro. Thank you very much for sharing this!
thank you for posting this. i just started a new job and am working on the debt snowball so i can be debt free.
This information is so helpful! I am trying to rebuild my path to a shackle free financial budget. So Again, I thank you for providing your info. Unfortunately, not everyone can afford to attend the information session/purchase the kits, but hopefully if I try this program, maybe soon in the future I can attend one of his sessions. This really helps. Thanks!!!
I would like to thank you so very much for posting this. My husband and I started Financial Peace University through our church Monday night the 5th! I have high hopes!
Chris -
Is this just an allocation sheet or is there a place/way to write in the amount you’ve budgeted for AND the amount you actually spend on a particular line item during the month?
Is it there and I’m just missing it?
Looks awesome otherwise
Thanks!
Hey I love this spreadsheet you’ve come up with! I am a huge fan of Dave–I have not made it to a FPU class yet though. I’m thinking of getting the home version since I do not really have time to GO to a class every week because of my ever changing schedule at work. I have read many of his books though and I’m on my way to being debt free. For the past year I have been using software from ynab.com. This software falls right in line with Dave’s thinking and has helped me pay off so much stuff— not to mention save a ton of money. You should check it out. Thanks again for making this spreadsheet!
Question - just opened your other longer version of this sheet and I love it as well — but I just thought of something…why is there not a space for those months with 5 weeks?…Like Jan basically has 5 weeks..or 5 fridays ( which is payday for me).
In the 3rd column of your original spreadsheet, it just shows #### in the columns when I enter my numbers. How do I change that?
(by the way, this is the budget template I have been wishing for!)
I think spread sheet is great.. maybe it would have be helpful if you included a sample sheet so people could see what it would look like.. Thanks
KERN, any chance you can post your sheets for use with Apple Numbers???
Thanks so much! I really love using a spreadsheet for budgeting but my formulas were off so this saved the day, especially using it along with Dave Ramsey’s other suggested work sheets.
Dear Chris:
You have done a phenomenal job with this spreadsheet! We have been on the Dave Ramsay program for the past six months, and your table makes everything 1,000 times easier. I am not a computer nerd, so I had to read all of your instructions. After I did, I was amazed at all the great things that can be done with that table. I love it! Thanks for being a great help on our process of changing our family tree!
Hi Chris,
This spreadsheet looks wonderful. I am currently using the budget software on Dave’s website but it will expire soon. I like the way you set up your spreadsheet to have the entire year in one file. I see the spaces to put the budgeted amounts but is there a way to see how much you actually used?
Thanks so much.
Anne- Yeah still on step 2
Hey man, thanks for doing the work for us! Haha, the spreadsheet is GREAT! Is there one for the monthly cashflow plan? I can’t find it.
Chris,
Thanks for your spreadsheet. Does it work in MS 2008 for Mac with the Visual Basic macros disabled (Mac 08 can’t use the Visual Macros)?
Thanks for this helpful tool.
Mark
I looked at the spreadsheet last week (the one with monthly tabs) but cannot find it now. Can you please help?? everytime time i try to download the 2nd spreadsheet I get the first one.
Thanks for your time!!
I have updated the Download Links. Please try again
